Featured Landscape Project
Spring is a magical season in the garden.
The beauty and wonder of the season was captured perfectly with this landscape project in McLean, Virginia.
Just look through the french doors in this photo and you’ll see what we mean. Your eyes are treated to a dazzling panorama of color and interest. Only one problem with this garden. You’ll never want to leave home!
With a large parcel of diverse terrain to work with, a natural landscape was designed, filled with romantic flowering plants and meandering paths, integrated with stone for steps, walls and focal areas designed to look like they had always been there.
Some traditional plants, such as the azaleas and rhododendrons that are so popular in the Washington D.C. area, were planted. Grasses, water features and other accents were incorporated to provide a contemporary touch.
Winding through the property is a long ravine, which was perfect for interest and intrigue.
This project evolved over the years, one or two areas at a time, all while keeping the natural, park-like setting. Large and luxurious azaleas, rhododendrons and hydrangeas; the stylish dogwoods, Japanese maples and magnolias; the roses, boxwood, andromeda and waves of perennials and ground covers all combine magically in this extraordinary garden.
Not all the plants are intended for emphasis. Some of the plantings, such as the cryptomeria, add unique texture and function, serving as privacy hedges and buffers.
One of the many highlights of this project is the expansive pond, which is stocked with colorful fish and adorned with aquatic plants, such water hyacinths and irises. Two waterfalls provide a beautiful display and a soothing sound. The grass grows right up to the water, making the pond seem very natural in its setting.
What’s great about this landscape is that it looks fantastic in all four seasons, not just spring.
