Camellias
Camellias have deep green evergreen foliage and range in height from four to ten feet. Camellias offer

spectacular flowers from fall to spring in white, pink, and red. While much loved in southern gardens, Camellias are also widely grown in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Their beautiful, shiny leaves lend to a variety of uses, such as borders, hedges, screens, and espaliers.
Growing Conditions:
Camellias grow best in partial sun/shade and prefer moist, acidic, well-drained soil that has high organic matter content. Camellias have a shallow root system, therefore mulching around the roots is suggested.
Proper Timing for Fertilizing & Pruning:
Camellias should be fed in early spring using a slow release fertilizer such as Merrifield Flowering Plant Food or Holly-Tone. Little if any pruning is required. If pruning is desired, it should be done after flowers have bloomed to control shape and size.
Camellia Varieties:
Merrifield Garden Center carries over 20 varieties of Camellias, including the cold-hardy Ackerman hybrid varieties, which bloom in the fall. The following list details the flower color, type, bloom time, and height. If you are looking for a variety that is not listed, we may be able to order it for you.
