Hiemalis Begonias

Hiemalis Begonias belong to the large genus of begonias containing between 1000 and 2000 hybrids. Hiemalis begonias are considered 'Flowering Pot Plant Begonias' belonging to the Elatior type hybrids. They are semi-tuberous and have glossy, round leaves up to 3" across and large showy blooms that can be about 2" across. They have become very popular in recent years and can be bought in flower virtually all year round.
These begonias do not like heat so it is best to keep them inside during the summer where they would benefit from air conditioning. Avoid temperatures above 80 F. They will tolerate temperatures as low as 50 F.

They prefer a bright spot away from direct sunlight. Placing them in a window with filtered light created by blinds or shears is good as well. A few hours of winter sun are beneficial.

Keep moist when plants are in flower, but do not keep them constantly soggy. Let soil dry out slightly between waterings. Provide good air circulation to prevent diseases.

Pinching out the tips when the plants are young will keep them bushy. Removing old flowers and leaves will encourage new blooms and new growth. Feed blooming plants monthly with a water soluble fertilizer.
