Hollies

GROWING CONDITIONS

Hollies prefer full sun to part shade in the landscape, but can also tolerate shadier conditions. Some native Hollies have grown in densely shaded woody environments. If planted in heavy shade, Hollies will grow a little thinner and may not berry as profusely, but will provide a nice, open appearance in the garden. Hollies prefer a slightly acid, well-drained soil.

PROPER TIMING FOR FERTILIZING & PRUNING

Hollies should be fed periodically throughout the year. Merrifield Garden Center recommends using a slow-release fertilizer, such as Merrifield Tree and Shrub Food 16-4-10 or Acid Loving Plant Food, at least twice during the year to provide long lasting nutrients to your Hollies. Ideal timing for feeding is either early spring or right after they berry and then again in the early fall. Pruning can be done either in early spring, early summer, or mid-winter. If you prefer to have a very natural look, pruning should be done in early spring, prior to the new growth; this will allow the new growth to come in naturally. If you prefer a more manicured appearance, pruning should be done in early summer, after the new growth has appeared. The only time it is not advisable to prune is early fall.
Hollies have both male and female cultivars available. Male plants will not bear fruit, but will act as pollinators to certain female species. This is important to keep in mind when planning a landscape for winter color.

Merrifield Garden Center carries over 50 different hybrids and cultivars of Hollies. On the following page is some basic information regarding height, spread, berries, and pollination requirements. Please note that the blue berries found on the Japanese Hollies are not as noticeable as on some other types.
