Pansy & Viola
Pansies and violas are a wonderful annual for color from September through May. Pansies resulted from the hybridization of wild violas, therefore, their care and growing requirements are very similar. Both prefer sunny, moist, but well-drained locations and thrive during cool weather.
Pansies produce larger flowers than violas, but, violas are more heat tolerant. Both can remain in the ground all winter and come in a wide range of color. Many varieties have a light fragrance. They are sold prior to Christmas and again in mid-March through April. Pansies and violas make wonderful accents and can be used in beds, border, and pots.
If this is a new garden bed, cover the soil with about 1 layer of compost, such as LeafGro or Super Fine Soil.
Conditioner, and mix it into the soil 4-6 inches deep. Following label directions, add Merrifield Starter Plant Food. You are now ready to start planting!
Pansies and violas grow quickly and should be pinched to keep them dense with lots of blooms. Rather than pinching all at once, pinch gradually to assure continuous flowering.
