Viburnums
The many different varieties of Viburnum offer a wide range of characteristics that appeal to gardeners. These beautiful flowering shrubs bloom in spring or summer depending upon the variety and range in size from 2' to 20'. Viburnum are often planted for fragrant blossoms, bright fall color, late-summer berries and their ability to attract small birds. Evergreen varieties offer the added bonus of winter interest.
GROWING CONDITIONS:
Viburnum prefer full sun to part shade and a moist, slightly acid, well-drained soil.
PROPER TIMING FOR FERTILIZING & PRUNING VIBURNUM:
Viburnum should be fed in early spring. Merrifield Garden Center recommends using a slow release fertilizer such as Merrifield Flowering Plant Food 10-18-12 or Osmocote. Viburnum blooms on the previous year's wood, and should therefore be pruned (if needed) just after they bloom and before the new buds are set in the fall. This practice may sacrifice some berries for that season.
VIBURNUM VARIETIES:
Merrifield Garden Center carries over 35 varieties of Viburnum. The attached chart is arranged alphabetically, following the botanical name. It also includes flower and berry color, bloom time, fragrance (if any), and ultimate height and spread. Although most varieties of Viburnum are deciduous, there are some evergreen and semi-evergreen varieties. The rate of growth for Viburnum varieties may vary. Under the "rate" category, three different rate symbols are listed:
F = Fast: 9" - 12" per year
M = Moderate: 5" - 8" per year
S = Slow: 2" - 4" per year
The varieties described on the following pages represent Viburnum that Merrifield Garden Center generally carries.
