Plants

At Merrifield Garden Center, flowers and foliage are what we do.

Now in our 45th year in the beauty business, we invite you to visit one of our three stores and discover our remarkable selection of beautiful plants.

We carry more than 2,000 different types of shrubs and trees – and more than 5,500 different types of annuals and perennials. In addition, we stock thousands of houseplants, bulbs, rose bushes, water plants, vegetables, herbs and flower and vegetable seeds.

Not only is there a wide selection, but there is superior quality. That’s because we’re picky. We only want the best. Our buyers travel coast to coast in search of gorgeous plants and unique varieties that will truly make an impact in your garden. In many cases, they spend days with growers and handpick beautiful, healthy shrubs and trees.

We also carry plants and supplies for the latest trends in gardening, such as flowers to benefit bees, butterflies and birds; native plants; drought and heat-tolerant succulents; container and vertical gardening; miniature gardens; and much more.

It’s hard to imagine a garden without annuals.

That’s because their beautiful blooms bring vivid, long-lasting color to the garden. They’re a great fit in all plantings – garden beds, container gardens, hanging baskets. New gardeners find annuals fun and easy to grow, making them a springboard to working with a wider range of plants. Children are attracted to the Crayola colors.

Annuals bloom spring through fall before perishing with frost at the onset of winter. Pansies, primroses and violas are exceptions. These cool-season annuals are planted in the fall or early spring, and provide gorgeous color until they eventually give way to the heat of summer.

At Merrifield Garden Center, we carry hundreds of different types of annuals in just about every color, size and shape you can dream of. We offer time-honored annuals, such as petunias, geraniums and marigolds, as well as the hot, new varieties that everyone’s talking about.

It’s no wonder perennials are growing in popularity.

Perennials give us a thrilling show of brilliant blooms for a couple of weeks to a couple of months during the season. When their flowers fade, their foliage continues to contribute color, texture and interest in the garden.

During the cold, dark winter months, perennials retreat to their roots and patiently wait for the first warm rays of spring sunlight to emerge once again. It’s a treat to watch perennials push up through the dirt in the spring and grow back into beautiful plants.

Daylilies, hostas, peonies, ferns, irises and ornamental grasses are some of our most popular perennials. We offer an amazing selection of these plants, but we have much more to offer. At Merrifield Garden Center, we carry more than 4,000 different types of perennials in a wide array of colors, shapes and sizes. Every year we typically introduce more than 100 different types.

With their structure, stability and permanence, shrubs are the foundation of any garden. Shrubs can help guide us with our other plantings and set the tone of our gardens, such as regal boxwoods in a formal landscape, old-fashioned lilacs in a cottage garden or sculptured topiaries to create a whimsical look and feel.

Often, evergreen shrubs serve as a frame to draw our attention to the beautiful blooming plants around them. But many shrubs go beyond their supporting role to briefly become the superstars of the garden with an explosive burst of color or a sweet fragrance.

Think of azaleas and rhododendrons, whose dramatic and prolific blooms help make April one of Washington’s most beautiful months. Or dramatic hydrangeas with their huge blossoms that shout “look at me!”

At Merrifield Garden Center, we carry more than 2,000 different types of shrubs. We stock timeless favorites and unique varieties that will expand your gardening possibilities.

Trees probably impact our property more than any other plant.

From towering elms and oaks to delightful dogwoods and stylish Japanese maples, trees serve us in many ways. Their leafy crowns dazzle us in spring and fall with spectacular color. During our sizzling summers, they shade and protect us. And, even in the desolation of winter, their sculpted branches are both artistic and inspiring when framed against the stark sky.

At Merrifield Garden Center, we carry a magnificent selection of trees – more than 300 types, including over 60 natives. We’re fortunate to live in an area that’s not too hot or too cold, enabling a wide variety of trees to thrive here. Often, the most difficult part about growing trees is deciding what to plant. But we’re here to help!

If you’ve never grown an edible garden, we urge you to try it. Believe us – there’s nothing quite like the mouthwatering taste of fresh vegetables and fragrant herbs that were grown in your own garden.

What could be more flavorful than spaghetti sauce that you created with ripe tomatoes just plucked off the vine and seasoned with homegrown basil and oregano planted just a few feet from your kitchen?

If you’re new to edible gardening, Merrifield Garden Center is a great place to begin. We offer one of the area’s widest selections of veggies and herbs, including many that are organically and locally grown. You can browse through our wide selection of these easy-to-grow plants and choose the ones you enjoy the most in your kitchen. And we’re always available and eager to answer all your questions.

Bon appétit!

We invite you to take a stroll through our tropical greenhouse, where you’ll be greeted with a dazzling display of gorgeous houseplants, a heavenly fragrance and smiling, helpful plant specialists to answer all your questions.

When you’re strolling down the aisles, you’ll discover orchids, African violets, cyclamen, miniature roses, jasmine and many other gorgeous blooming and foliage plants. We carry thousands of plants, with hundreds of cacti alone. Not only do we stock the staples, such as philodendron, ficus and pothos, but also many of the hottest new varieties.

If you’re hesitant to bring some of these beauties into your home because you’re not sure how to take care of them, we’re here to help. We want you to be successful. We encourage you to try houseplants, because we know that if you love playing in the dirt outdoors, you’re going to love it indoors, too.

Bulbs: Just when you’re weary of winter, bright and cheery bulbs are a welcome sight. They start popping up in early spring – sometimes through the snow – to start the parade of breathtaking color in the garden. For a relatively small investment in time and money, bulbs are very rewarding. They’re easy to plant and take care of – and they can be counted on to bloom year after year. At Merrifield Garden Center, we can help you create a colorful palette of bulbs. We stock about 350 varieties, including about 100 varieties of tulips and about 75 varieties of daffodils.

Roses: From English and hybrid teas to climbing and shrub roses, we offer a wide array of roses with beautiful blooms. Don’t have a green thumb? Don’t worry. Knock Out Roses – one of the top selling rose bushes in the industry – are easy to take care of and have been bred for repeat blooms, hardiness and resistance to black spot. Many credit the introduction of Knock Out roses to the resurgence of roses in area gardens.

Water Plants: Gardening in the ground and gardening in water share much in common. The idea of matching the right plant to the right place and designing for contrasting or complementary colors, textures and forms applies to water gardens, too. Just as the selection of garden plants continues to increase, so does the selection of floating, submersible and bog plants. They are a must-have for every water garden. Not only are they beautiful, but water plants help maintain water quality and create habitat.

Flower and Vegetable Seeds: It’s simply amazing to watch small, barely visible seeds mature into plants that can be used to feed your family or brighten your life with showy flowers. We offer an enormous selection of seeds, including organically grown, heirloom, hybrid and unusual varieties, with a complete selection of seed starting supplies.
