More about the plants
Pieris Japonica
A medium-sized evergreen shrub native to eastern China, Taiwan, and Japan. In spring, the shrub produces colorful, wispy, and weeping flowers of white and pink blooms. Its lush foliage makes it attractive all year round. If you decide to remove it from the container and plant it in the garden at any point, place in a part shade location away from the hot afternoon sun.
Hellebore
One of the first blooms you’ll see in late winter and early spring. Evergreen perennial with beautiful foliage. They bloom in winter and spring, typically from November through April. They come in all different colors including apricot, pink, purple, white and yellow. They are native to European and Asian countries. After they are done blooming, their attractive greenery remains. If you wish to transplant your hellebores from the container to the garden, find an area with part shade away from hot afternoon sun. An ideal location for hellebores in the garden is under deciduous trees where they are protected from the hot sun in summer.
Heuchera
Colorful evergreen foliage that shoots up blooms in winter and spring. They come in all different colors including apricot, pink, purple, white, and yellow. If you transplant your hellebores from the container to the garden, find an area with partial shade away from the hot afternoon sun. An ideal location for hellebores is under deciduous trees where they are protected from the hot sun in summer.
Sun Requirements
This container will thrive in part shade, away from hot afternoon sun.
Water Requirements
This container’s soil should be moist but not sopping wet. Do not let the plant fully dry out. We recommend checking the soil with your finger often to make sure that it is consistently moist.
Soil Requirements
These plants need well-draining soil. We recommend using our Merrifield Potting Mix.
Fertilizing requirements
We recommend using Plant Tone and Jack’s Classic blossom booster fertilizer when feeding the plants in your container. When you plant these varieties in your container, we recommend applying Plant Tone granular fertilizer into the soil first and then planting directly into the soil. Then, we recommend adding Jack’s Classic typically every couple of weeks. Add 1 tablespoon of Jack’s per gallon of water and pour it into the soil of your container thoroughly.
Deadheading
After the pieris japonica blooms in spring, you can deadhead the blossoms using clippers or shears to remove the spent flowers. The heuchera will also bloom in springtime. The old blossoms should be removed when it is finished. Hellebores bloom in winter and spring. When the flowers are spent, deadhead these and let the beautiful foliage take center stage.
Overwintering
This entire container can be overwintered outside during the colder months. When overwintering containers outdoors, be sure that the vessel is not sitting directly on the ground, but rather boosted by plant toes or sturdy plant stands.
