After 25 years of empowering Washington, D.C., area gardeners with an in-depth knowledge of horticulture sprinkled with down-home humor and a love of plants, “Merrifield’s Gardening Advisor” is off the air.

It was a joy and privilege to share the wonderful world of gardening with you for all these years.

The show had an incredible run. It was one of the first cable television productions in the Washington, D.C., area.

“Merrifield’s Gardening Advisor” will be remembered as more than just a Saturday morning gardening show. For its many viewers, cast and crew, it was truly family.

We’re looking forward to the future.

“The American Dream: The Rags to Roses Story Of Bob Warhurst And The Founding Of Merrifield Garden Center”

The Fascinating and Inspirational Story Is Revealed For The First Time

Bob Warhurst was not born into power or money, but grew into both with the strength of his ideas, hard work and unrelenting determination. His life reflects the rise of America after the Great Depression and World War II, celebrating the nation’s most singular gift to the world: the American Dream. It is a dream that says any man or woman can rise above the most humble beginnings to become successful in the competition called life.

This book captures the amazing journey of a poor country boy with a heart of gold. Follow his adventures as he elevates himself and his family from heartbreaking poverty in Depression-era Alabama to become co-founder of Merrifield Garden Center, one of the nation’s leading independent garden centers.

“He has a great story that I’m sure will be inspiring to many,” said Washington Redskins Hall of Fame Coach Joe Gibbs.

“Bob Warhurst’s life story should be required reading for all young people,’ said Andre Viette, renowned horticulturist, gardening radio talk show host and educator. “He has never given up and has accomplished many things on his road through life. He has proven that hard work and perseverance can lead to success.”

“The American Dream is the real life story of a man who’s so clearly focused on creating opportunity for others and himself that there’s simply no way that he could fail,” said Ahmed Hassan, celebrity landscaper and the original host of HGTV and DIY Network’s Yard Crashers. “Every setback was merely another challenge. His life, a case study that shows that no matter who you are, no matter where you’re from, no matter what other folks think, it’s up to you to respond to life, be humbled by nature and create the life of your dreams.”

Bob’s evolution from bricklayer to trash collector to captain of commerce was not always pretty and the odds were stacked against him, but that is also the history of this great nation. What we all can learn from Bob Warhurst is that the human spirit is indomitable and resilient, and that doing the right thing is the only thing to do.

This is also the story of family and how unconditional love, dogged determination and tireless work can overcome the absence of formal education. And how Bob and his family stayed united in the face of a world that sometimes valued chicanery over honesty and financial connections over family ties.

The Bob Warhurst story is a tale of America as it used to be and should be today.
