Mother’s Day Gift Guide
Gardening tools and plants make wonderful gifts for the mom in your life who loves to spend time in the garden cultivating flowers, vegetables and shrubs. Here are a few of our favorite picks for mom this season.
Custom Containers
Containers are a great idea for any mom’s deck, patio, balcony or front stoop. They pack a powerful punch of color and interest, even a small or shady space. To keep your containers thriving, follow these care tips:
- Check your container for water every two to three days by placing a dry finger into the soil a few inches deep. Water thoroughly when the soil is starting to dry out until the soil is fully saturated. During hot, sunny periods check your container for water daily. Water immediately if you see signs of wilting.
- Fertilize every two to three weeks with a water-soluble fertilizer to keep your plants blooming and full. Follow the recommended application amount on the product package.
- Remove faded blooms on annuals (a process called deadheading) so the plant directs its energy to producing new flowers.
- If your plants become leggy, cut them back by ⅓ to ½ and fertilize. They will then begin to branch out within 2 to 3 weeks.
