Irrigation Systems

At Merrifield Garden Center, our irrigation experts work hand in hand with our plant specialists to design irrigation systems that can accommodate the needs of the established landscape, new lawns and plantings and container plantings. If you are interested in installing an automatic irrigation system in your landscape, schedule a Full Service Landscape Appointment.

Irrigation System Components

Irrigation systems are made up of a set of underground pipes that provide water to different areas of your landscape via sprinkler heads or drip irrigation. The sprinkler heads will pop up from the ground when it’s time to water, remaining hidden in the landscape when not in use. The system is controlled by a programmable controller that allows you to regulate the amount of water required in a given zone, by configuring the frequency and duration.

For instance, your zones might be your vegetable bed, your perennial garden, your lawn and your potted plants. Each of these zones will have their own sprinkler heads joined underground by PVC pipe or drip irrigation connected by what we call spaghetti tubing. All of these zones will be connected to a controller that you can either place in your garage or directly on your hose bib. With this controller, you can control how often each zone is watered and how much the valve will emit.

There are different types of sprinkler heads that accomplish different needs:

With an oscillating spray head that can spin 360 degrees, we often use rotating sprinklers to water lawn areas.

With precise aim, spray heads are often used to water larger shrubs and reach specific plants throughout the landscape.

These emit an umbrella of water that will reach the root systems of large trees that require a large volume of water.

Using spaghetti tubing, drip irrigation systems provide a delicate drip of water, popular for watering containers and vegetable gardens.
