The backbone of hard surfaces in the landscape, stone products are often used to construct walkways, patios, driveways, steps and retaining walls. They serve a functional purpose in the landscape, providing a solid surface to walk or drive on. They also have an aesthetic purpose, offering attractive patterns, texture and interest. Incorporating landscaping stones into your project can elevate your outdoor space’s level of sophistication.
At Merrifield Garden Center, we carry many different types of stone, including natural and engineered options. Natural stones are sourced from Mother Nature and include materials like flagstone, limestone, travertine and marble or quartz. These stones are quarried and have timeless quality and beauty. Engineered options are man-made to look like stone and vary in style from traditionally inspired looks to more modern and contemporary patterns. Because these are manufactured, each piece is the same thickness, making it an easier product to lay regardless of application style. Depending on the manufacturer, they can also come with a lifetime warranty on the structural integrity if installed correctly.
Flagstone is a hard, natural stone with uniform internal layers that split into flat, thin pieces. It is best known for its color and texture as each piece has its own special attributes and characteristics. It can come in beautiful shades of blue, gray and lavender or shades of tan, brown and red. Flagstone is commonly used in the landscape as a patio, pathway or stepping stone. Often, landscape designers will combine different shapes, sizes or color waves to create interesting and unique surfaces.
We source our flagstone from Pennsylvania and carry it by the piece or by the pallet in the following varieties:

Primarily used as facing stones on retaining walls, these naturally occurring stones are made up of materials such as flint, granite, limestone and sandstone. They’re available by thickness and come in thin (1 to 3”) and regular (3 to 5”). We sell them by the quarter pallet, which weighs approximately 500 lbs and covers 3 to 5 sq. ft. A full pallet can weigh 2,800 to 3,200 lbs and covers 15 to 20 sq. ft. Along with retaining walls, these stones can be used to border planters, flowerbeds and patios, face bars and grill areas, adorn fire pits and construct waterfalls, benches or seating areas.

Stepping stones are rocks placed throughout the landscape to form a safe walking path. We carry natural stepping stones in 14 – 16” rounds, and aggregate stepping stones in assorted sizes and square and round shapes. Natural stepping stones are flat and contain quartz, giving them a particularly glittery appearance that is attractive in the sunlight as you walk across your yard. Aggregate stepping stones are composed of small river rocks held together by concrete. They come in shades of tan and brown to blue, gray, purple and white.

If you’re seeking permeable pavers for your space, note that this can be accomplished using both natural and engineered stone products. Permeable pavers are laid in a way where each piece of stone is spaced to leave a joint or open ground between to soak up the moisture and limit the amount of water that runs off your property to mitigate flooding. With the many materials and layers of drainage required for permeable pavers, we recommend working with a professional installer. They will understand how to build an effective base layer with gravel, stone and landscape fabric and level the surface for a flat paver experience. If you are interested in installing permeable pavers, book a Full Service Landscape Appointment and we’ll be happy to walk you through your options.
Edging products clearly define separate areas of your landscape, such as patios from garden beds or lawns from pathways. When it comes to choosing your edging product, it’s often a matter of personal aesthetic. For the most part, using edging in the landscape is optional and based on the look you want to achieve. It is required when installing hardscapes, such as a paver patio, walkway, or driveway as it keeps the stonework and gravel in place for years to come. We carry wooden, plastic, stone and metal edging options at our three locations of Merrifield Garden Center. We suggest coming to see our stone and edging experts to determine the perfect edging to use in any given landscape project.
Our wood edging options are made out of wood timbers, providing a natural look in the landscape. Each option can run in a single layer, or stacked to form a taller barrier.
Plastic edging is easy to work with and will typically stay in place for longer periods of time than other edging materials like aluminum and steel. It will not rust and is inexpensive.
While you can use metal edging like aluminum and steel for any edging project, it’s most commonly used to define hardscapes, such as walkways, patios or driveways. Metal edging is heavy and durable and beloved for its industrial look and feel. It comes in straight pieces with the option to add connectors and right angle corners. The ⅛” thick versions of aluminum and steel edges work well around slight curves. Since it’s wider than plastic, wooden and stone edging, metal edging is ideal for bordering areas that are taller, such as elevated patios or pool decks. When installing metal edging, we recommend hiring a professional as this type of edging is heavy and cumbersome, requiring special tools and bigger trucks to transport and install.
In addition to traditional wood, plastic and metal edging options, you can also use natural or engineered stones and bricks to create a more rustic edge around planting beds. We carry Belgian blocks in black, gray and pink in 4 x 4 x 8”, 5 x 5 x 9” and 10 x 4 x 7”. We also stock a selection of paver edging and other stone products in our stone yards.
