Frey Brothers Dehydrated Cow Manure is a 100% natural product, sourced directly from dairy farms in Southern Lancaster County, PA. Dehydrated cow manure is made by pulling out the moisture from composted cow manure, resulting in a more potent, concentrated and nutrient rich soil conditioner. We recommend using dehydrated cow manure to add important nutrients to planting beds and lawns. It helps to loosen heavy clay soil and boost water retention in sandy soils, resulting in improved aeration all around.

Frey Brothers Dehydrated Cow Manure is labeled with an NPK ratio of 1-1-1. This means it contains:

  • 1% Nitrogen (N): For green, leafy growth
  • 1% Phosphorus (P): For strong root development and blooms
  • 1% Potassium (K): For overall plant health and disease resistance

We stock Frey Brothers Dehydrated Cow Manure in 0.75 cu. ft. bags. One 0.75 cu. ft. bag will cover roughly 36 to 40 sq. ft. at a ¼” depth or 9 sq. ft. at 1” deep.

We offer local delivery services for bagged and bulk products. In addition to delivery, we can also provide installation services. If you’re interested in having our team install your compost, please book a landscape appointment and select Garden Cleanup, Mulch and Sod as the appointment type.

Dehydrated Cow Manure is dehydrated and concentrated, making it more potent than standard composted cow manure. Always ensure you are mixing dehydrated cow manure into your existing soil rather than planting directly into it to avoid nutrient burn on young seedlings.

When using dehydrated cow manure as a soil conditioner, we recommend the following amounts based on these primary applications:

  • Topdressing garden & vegetable beds: Spread 1” of dehydrated cow manure over the top of the soil and mix it into the top 6” of soil.
  • Amending garden & vegetable bed soil: Mix 1 part dehydrated cow manure to 3 parts topsoil or existing garden soil. Mix thoroughly.
  • Lawn seed or sod: Remove weeds and debris from the area. Loosen compacted soil with a rake or garden fork for best incorporation. Spread ¼” across the entire area and mix lightly into the top 1 to 2” of soil.

How does dehydrated cow manure differ from composted cow manure?

Dehydrated cow manure goes through a heat treatment process to remove the moisture in cow manure, resulting in a product that is more concentrated and potent than composted cow manure. The heating process helps kill harmful bacteria and weed seeds and removes the pungent scent associated with cow manure.

Can I plant directly into dehydrated cow manure?

No. Because it is dehydrated, it is highly concentrated. Planting directly into dehydrated cow manure can lead to "nutrient burn" on young roots. It should always be mixed with your native soil or topsoil (typically at a 1:4 ratio).

How do I know which soil conditioner to use?

Compost and other soil conditioners like Frey Brothers Dehydrated Cow Manure, McGills Premium Compost, Leafgro, Bumper Crop and Soil Mate are all interchangeable and can be used anywhere in the landscape. With that said, they each have their own ideal application.

Frey Brothers Dehydrated Cow Manure is best for amending planting beds and topdressing lawns. McGills works best when added to lawns. Leafgro and Soil Mate is the most economical choice and can be used in all locations. Bumper Crop works well in vegetable gardens. Soil Mate is similar to Leafgro and it is the only soil conditioner we have in bulk.

How much do I need compared to regular bagged manure?

Because dehydrated cow manure is a more concentrated product (due to the water being removed), you use significantly less dehydrated cow manure compared to composted cow manure. One 0.75 cu. ft. bag contains a similar nutrient punch to roughly 10 to 15 bags of standard "wet" composted manure. One 0.75 cu. ft. bag will cover roughly 36 to 40 sq. ft. at a ¼” depth or 9 sq. ft. at a 1” depth.
