Our black polished stone is a very attractive addition to your landscape with its smooth, shiny texture. It is primarily used for decorative purposes, accenting outdoor gardens as well as inside the home in bowls or vases. It works well as a groundcover placed in bed borders or along pathways and as a decorative alternative to wood-based mulch. The stones are very durable, making your landscape look elegant and modern.

Each black polished stone is ¾” to 1” long. We stock them in 40 lb. bags with 55 bags fitting on the pallet. If you’re ordering a full pallet of material, we will bring a forklift to unload the product onto your driveway.

We can deliver the bags of black polished stone to your location. In addition to delivery, we can also provide installation services. If you’re interested in having our team install your black polished stone, please book a landscape appointment and select Garden Cleanup, Mulch and Sod as the appointment type. If you are interested in having our landscape design team build out a garden bed, patio, walkway or other hard surface, please book a Full Service landscape design appointment.

When installing black polished stone and other decorative stone products:

  • Measure the area where you intend to place your black polished stone. Then, use our coverage calculator to determine how much polished stone you need.
  • Use an edger to create a perimeter around the area you wish to fill.
  • Use a hoe to remove the grass where you will place your black polished stone.
  • Dig the area about 2 to 3” deep and wide as you wish.
  • Level or grade the ground with a hard rake or a lawn leveling tool.
  • Pin down landscape fabric with sod pins to inhibit weed growth and keep the stones from settling into the Earth.
  • Place your black polished stone and hand spread it into place.

Rinse the stone with water to remove any dust or dirt debris.

How do I know how much stone to use?

In general, we recommend installing decorative stones, such as black polished stones, 2 to 3” deep. If you need to fill in up to the level where you’ll place your decorative gravel you can use any kind of inexpensive base gravel that you have on hand, such as 57 gravel or blue stone gravel. Use our coverage calculator to determine how much material you’ll need for any given space in the garden based on the square footage of the area.

What is black polished stone made from?

Black polished stone is typically a natural river stone or basalt that has been tumbled and polished for a smooth, glossy finish.

Does the polished finish fade over time?

Yes, UV sunlight, rain, and natural weathering will gradually dull the shine over time. The stone itself remains black, but the glossy finish becomes more matte.

Will the black color fade?

The stones themselves do not fade significantly, but dust, dirt and mineral deposits can make the stones appear lighter. Rinsing or lightly washing them restores most of the color.

How long do polished stones last?

Indefinitely. They do not decompose, rot, or break down, making them a long-term low-maintenance option.
