McGills premium compost, also known as SoilBuilder, is made from composted biodegradable materials, including agricultural by-products, food processing waste, yard waste and human biosolids. Its consistency is very similar to topsoil. With a high nutrient content due to the presence of biosolids, McGills Premium Compost is ideal to use when seeding, sodding or top dressing the lawn and often results in a deep, lush, green lawn.

We stock 40 pound bags of McGills premium compost with 60 bags fitting on a pallet. If you’re ordering a full pallet of material we will bring a forklift to unload the product onto your driveway. We also carry this product in bulk by the cubic yard.

We can deliver the bags of McGills premium compost to your location. In addition to delivery, we can also provide installation services. If you’re interested in having our team install your compost, please book a landscape appointment and select Garden Cleanup, Mulch and Sod as the appointment type.

When installing a soil conditioner:

  • Figure out what your soil already has and what it might need. Universities with horticulture departments typically have soil testing capabilities if you wish to send samples for them to identify.
  • Measure your landscape to determine how much soil conditioner you will need in your area. When you know your measurements, you can visit us at Merrifield or put it into our convenient product calculator on our website and we can help you get the exact amount of McGills that you need.
  • Take out all the debris you find in your yard. Removing leaves, branches, roots and twigs will help the soil conditioner get to the soil as quickly, completely and efficiently as possible. This will also help prevent weeds and pests from invading your yard.
  • Use a garden fork or rake to till the soil where you’ll be adding the soil conditioner. Mix up to 25% of McGills with 75% of soil saved as you were digging. Be careful to not hurt the soil structure or compact the soil too much as you are tilling, and refrain from tilling the soil when it is too dry or too wet, as it can damage the soil structure.
  • Water the area thoroughly. Then, start spreading the soil conditioner around your desired area. Work the conditioner into the soil using a garden fork or rake. We recommend working the conditioner into the soil at a depth of 4 to 5”. This will help get the nutrients down into the root system. After you work and mix the conditioner into the soil, give it a good soak.

How do I know which soil conditioner to use?

Compost and other soil conditioners like McGills Premium Compost, Leafgro, Bumper Crop, Super Fines Soil Conditioner and Soil Mate are all interchangeable and can be used anywhere in the landscape. With that said, they each have their own ideal application. McGills works best when added to lawns. Leafgro is the most economical choice and can be used in all locations. Bumper Crop works well in vegetable gardens. Super Fines Soil Conditioner works well as a top dressing and is best for clay soils. Soil Mate is similar to Leafgro and it is the only soil conditioner we have in bulk.
