Sphagnum Peat Moss is partially decomposed moss that is fibrous and spongy. It’s farmed from Canadian peat bogs, dried and bagged. Peat moss is a consistent product that is known to hold up to 20 times its weight in water while simultaneously supporting good drainage and aeration, acting as a great addition to vegetable gardens, raised beds and containers. It’s a popular ingredient in pre-mixed potting mediums, often serving as the backbone of the blends.

We stock sphagnum peat moss in 1 cubic foot bags, 2.2 cubic foot bags, 3.8 cubic foot bags and 5.5 cubic foot bags. 100 1 cubic foot bags can fit on a pallet, 50  2.2 cubic foot bags can fit on a pallet, 30 3.8 cubic foot bags can fit on a pallet and 20 5.5 cubic foot bags can fit on a pallet. If you’re ordering a full pallet of material we will bring a forklift to unload the product onto your driveway.

When using sphagnum moss to plant trees and shrubs:

  • Dig a hole twice the size and as deep as the root ball.
  • Soak the moss so it is thoroughly wet before adding it in. It should be wet enough that water drips from it.
  • Stir the moss with your existing soil and use that to backfill into your planting hole.
  • Place mulch on top of your soil to insulate the roots of whatever plant, tree or shrub you are planting with sphagnum peat moss.

When using sphagnum peat moss in a container:

  • If you are looking to create your own potting mix, you can blend peat moss with other ingredients such as vermiculite, perlite, aged bark or compost.
  • Blend your ingredients together while they are dry.
  • When you’re ready to use it, dampen or pre-moisten it prior to use.
  • Add it to your container and water the mix well.

What is sphagnum peat moss?

Sphagnum peat moss is a natural organic material harvested from peat bogs. It forms after sphagnum moss and other plant materials partially decompose over long periods in cold, wet environments. It is widely used to improve soil structure, moisture retention and aeration.

Does peat moss retain moisture?

Yes, extremely well. It can hold 10 to 20 times its weight in water, helping soil stay moist longer.

Does peat moss improve drainage?

Yes, it improves both drainage and moisture retention by loosening compacted soil and adding pore space. It’s especially effective in clay soils.

How much does a bale cover?

As a general guideline: a 3.8 cu ft compressed bale expands to 6 to 8 cu. ft. and can amend roughly 50 to100 sq ft of soil at a 2 to 3" deep.

Is peat moss dusty?

Yes, dry peat moss is very lightweight and dusty. Lightly moisten it before mixing to reduce dust and improve workability.

Is peat moss safe for starting seeds?

Yes, its light, sterile texture is ideal for seed starting. It helps create a fine, airy mix that supports delicate roots.
