How to calculate the square footage of an area

Leafgro is a great product to use as a soil amendment while planting trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants, or as a topdressing for reseeding a lawn or preparing flower beds before mulching. Leafgro is made from 100% composted leaves, sticks and grass clippings from all over the Maryland area. It is used as a soil conditioner for any plants or as a top dressing for your lawn. Maryland Environmental Service (MES) begins the composting process in the fall as they collect leaves and yard waste that would otherwise be disposed of in a landfill. In its composting facilities, MES turns, screens and dries the product to create a nutrient rich, deep brownish black soil amendment.

We stock 1.5 cubic foot bags of Leafgro with 50 bags fitting on a pallet. If you’re ordering a full pallet of material we will bring a forklift to unload the product onto your driveway.

We can deliver the bags of Leafgro to your location. In addition to delivery, we can also provide installation services. If you’re interested in having our team install your Leafgro, please book a landscape appointment and select Garden Cleanup, Mulch and Sod as the appointment type.

When applying Leafgro:

  • Dig a hole twice the size and as deep as the root ball of the plant in your garden.
  • Mix equal parts Leafgro and existing soil.
  • Add about 2” of the mix to the bottom of the hole and carefully place the root ball within the space.
  • Fill the area around the root ball half way with your amended soil mix.
  • Tamp it with your feet or hands.
  • Water the area thoroughly and then fill the remaining soil mix to ground level, tamping again. If your root ball is slightly above ground level, that is ideal.

For lawns that you wish to reseed:

  • Add lawn seed to your area and spread Leafgro evenly on top.
  • Roll the space and water normally.

How do I know which soil conditioner to use?

Compost and other soil conditioners like McGills Premium Compost, Leafgro, Bumper Crop, Super Fines Soil Conditioner and Soil Mate are all interchangeable and can be used anywhere in the landscape. With that said, they each have their own ideal application. McGills works best when added to lawns. Leafgro is the most economical choice and can be used in all locations. Bumper Crop works well in vegetable gardens. Super Fines Soil Conditioner works well as a top dressing and is best for clay soils. Soil Mate is similar to Leafgro and it is the only soil conditioner we have in bulk.

Can you mulch with Leafgro or Soil Mate?

Some people prefer to use Leafgro and Soil Mate as a mulch, which is a good alternative if you want to improve your soil by giving it essential nutrients. Having said that, it breaks down much faster than bark mulch and therefore will have to be replenished much more frequently than just once a year. It is doable, but perhaps is not as economically effective as using our bark mulches.
