Made at Merrifield Garden Center, we source our screened clay locally from our landscape jobs and blend it and dry it to remove debris and refine the product. Screened clay is often used as a base material in landscape projects. With its dense structure, it strengthens its surroundings. You can use a base of screened clay when sloped properly to prevent unnecessary water from pooling, drifting or flooding toward your house. Or use it around a mailbox to keep it standing straight.
We stock screened clay in bulk by the cubic yard.
We can deliver a maximum of 4 yards per truck to your home. One yard of screened clay is equivalent to 2,000 lbs. The maximum amount of weight we can fit on one truck is 12,500 lbs. If you need more than 4 cubic yards of screened clay, it will require more truck(s) and additional delivery fee(s).
In addition to delivery, we can also provide installation services. If you’re interested in having our team install your screened clay, please book a landscape appointment and select Draining & Grading Issues as the appointment type. If you are interested in having our landscape design team build out a patio, walkway, driveway or other hard surface, please book a Full Service landscape design appointment.
When installing screened clay:
Tamp down the screened clay with a tamper or your feet. This will create a strong base that won’t move much with weather and watering. Smooth it out with a rake and then rinse your rocks to remove dust and dirt and keep it looking fresh and clean.
What is screened clay?
Screened clay is natural clay soil that is run through a screen to remove rocks, roots and debris. The result is a smooth, uniform fill material.
What is screened clay used for?
It can be used for backfilling around foundations, raising grades, filling low spots, as a base for lawns or in creating berms. It is not good for any projects that require water to pass through, such as a base for pavers or driveways or drainage areas.
Does screened clay compact well?
Yes, screened clay compacts very well. You can expect 20 to 30% compaction depending on the moisture and the thickness of the layer. We recommend compacting after layering in 2” of screened clay.
Is screened clay good for drainage projects?
No, it is the worst material to use in a drainage project as water moves through it extremely slowly.
How do I know how much screened clay to use?
When you add stone, mulch, soil conditioner, topsoil, sand and gravel to your cart when browsing our website, we have a convenient calculator which determines how much material you’ll need for any given space in the garden. You can measure the space where you wish to add mulch, stone or topsoil and apply that to our calculator to see how much you will need.
