Our Merrifeld Topsoil is most commonly used as a topdressing to repair bare spots in lawns or as a soil additive for planting in the ground and in raised beds. It helps to loosen and aerate clay soil for better root growth. Topsoil is also a great foundational product to level or grade areas of your landscape. If you want to fill in a hole, it is best to use topsoil because it has structure and strength and won’t degrade over time. You can also use it to fix pooling water by building up the sunken area with a few inches of topsoil.

We make our bulk topsoil on site and it may contain a few screening remnants, such as small rocks or sticks. Our bagged topsoil also contains compost, which gives it a higher nutritional value.

We stock topsoil in 40 lb. bags or in bulk by the cubic yard.

We offer local delivery services for bagged and bulk products. We can deliver a maximum of 4 cubic yards on one truck. Additional yards over 4 will require additional truck(s), and therefore additional delivery fee(s).

In addition to delivery, we can also provide installation services. If you’re interested in having our team install your topsoil, please book a landscape appointment and select Garden Cleanup, Mulch and Sod as the appointment type.

For lawns:

  • Lightly cover seeded areas with a ¼” layer of Merrifield Topsoil. This will help keep the seed moist and in place for improved germination. One 40 lb. bag covers approximately 32 sq. ft. at a depth of ¼”.
  • Before laying sod, mix a ½” layer of Merrifield Topsoil into the top 2 to 3” of the soil. This will help with root establishment. One 40 lb. bag covers approximately 16 sq. ft. at a depth of ½”.

For flower and vegetable beds:

  • Remove weeds and debris from the bed, then dig or till the soil to break up and level the existing ground.
  • Incorporate 1” of Merrifield Topsoil into the top 3” of the existing soil, then begin planting. One 40 lb. bag covers approximately 8 sq. ft.

For trees and shrubs:

  • Dig a hole that is slightly shallower and at least 6” wider than the root ball on all sides. The top of the root ball should be slightly higher than ground level (1 to 2” high for smaller plants and 2 to 4” high for larger plants).
  • Mix ⅓ Merrifield Topsoil with ⅔ existing soil.
  • Backfill the amended soil mixture around the root ball, gently tamping the soil as you go.
  • When you finish planting, apply a 2 to 3” layer of mulch and water slowly, deeply and thoroughly.

What can topsoil be used for?

Topsoil can be used for a variety of different applications to improve your soil’s nutrients and support new plant growth. We recommend using it to fill in low spots throughout the yard, as a topdressing when planting grass seed or sod or to amend the soil in garden beds or when planting trees and shrubs.

How thick should the layer of topsoil be?

If you’re using topsoil as a topdressing and seeding, we recommend lightly covering seeded areas with a ¼” layer of Merrifield Topsoil.

If you’re putting down sod, we recommend mixing a ½” layer of Merrifield Topsoil into the top 2 to 3” of the soil.

If you’re using it to amend an existing landscape bed, we recommend incorporating a 1” of Merrifield Topsoil into the top 3” of the existing soil prior to planting.

If you’re using topsoil as the base layer in a deep raised bed, we recommend putting down a 4 to 8” layer of topsoil.
