57 gravel is the most commonly used base gravel in our area. It consists of crushed limestone, blue stone, quartzite and limestone. The pieces are jagged and angular. When compacted, the pieces will allow air and water to flow through to the soil underneath, making this an ideal material to use as a base for hardscapes and drainage projects.

We stock 57 gravel by the 50 lb. bag and in bulk cubic yards.

We can deliver a maximum of 4 cubic yards on one truck over to your location. One yard of 57 gravel is equivalent to 2,600 pounds and the maximum amount of weight we can fit on one truck is 12,500 lbs. If you need more than 4 cubic yards of 57 gravel, it will require additional truck(s) and additional delivery fee(s).

In addition to delivery, we can also provide installation services. If you’re interested in having our team install your 57A gravel, please book a landscape appointment and select Draining & Grading Issues as the appointment type. If you are interested in having our landscape design team build out a patio, walkway, driveway or other hard surface, please book a Full Service landscape design appointment.

When installing 57 gravel and other base gravel products:

  • Measure the area where you intend to place your gravel. Then, use our coverage calculator to determine how much 57 gravel you need.
  • Use an edger to create a perimeter around the area you wish to fill.
  • Use a hoe to remove the grass where you will place your landscaping stone.
  • Dig the area as deep and wide as you wish to place your 57 gravel. See the frequently asked questions section for recommended depths.

Tamp down the 57 gravel with a tamper or a roller. This will create a strong base that won’t move much with weather and watering. Smooth it out with a rake and then rinse your rocks to remove dust and dirt and keep it looking fresh and clean.

How do I know how much stone to use?

The typical common depths for base gravels like 57 gravel are:

  • Patios: 4 to 6”
  • Garden paths: 2 to 4”
  • Paver walkways: 4 to 6”
  • Driveways: 10 to 12”

All of these recommended depths are based on the assumption that you are working with a good, solid soil base. To determine if you have a good, solid soil base take a piece of rebar and press it into the ground using your body weight. If it only goes into the ground up to 2”, the soil base is sufficient. If it goes into the soil more than that, you need to continue to remove the soft soil until you reach a solid base. Continue to test the soil base in this same manner until you’ve reached hard soil.

Use our coverage calculator to see how much material you need for your square footage based on the depth of your application.

Is 57 gravel a good option for a permeable driveway?

Yes, 57 gravel is the ideal material to use as a base layer in a permeable driveway as it allows water to drain through.

Does 57 gravel compact well?

57 gravel does compact by 10% when shaken into place.

What is 57 gravel commonly used for?

57 gravel is most commonly used to create a base for permeable pavers and driveways. It’s the preferred gravel for drainage projects as it allows the water to move freely through the material. It is also used as a decorative topper for gravel driveways.

Can you use 57 gravel by itself as a base for patios?

We recommend layering 57 gravel with 21A for a solid base.

Will 57 gravel wash away?

It can, especially on slopes or in high flow water areas because the gravel is clean and loose. We recommend using edging or a larger stone surround to help stabilize the gravel when placed on a slope.
