When installing Coast of Maine’s Planting Soil for Roses & Flowers as a soil conditioner:

  • Measure the length and width of your garden area to determine your square footage and put it into our convenient product calculator to determine how much soil conditioner you will need in your area.
  • Remove any existing debris from your desired planting area, such as leaves, branches, roots and twigs. If your soil is particularly dry, compacted or dense, water the area 1 to 2 days in advance to make the soil easier to work with. Then, use a garden fork or rake to till the soil where you’ll be adding the soil conditioner. Be careful to avoid compacting the soil too much as you are tilling.
  • Start spreading the soil conditioner around your desired area. We recommend applying a 2 to 3” layer of Coast of Maine’s Planting Soil for Roses & Flowers and working it into the top 4 to 6” of soil using a rake. This will help get the nutrients down into the root system. After you work and mix the conditioner into the soil, give it a thorough watering.
  • We recommend applying Coast of Maine’s Planting Soil for Roses & Flowers annually in early spring before new foliage emerges. You can also apply it in the middle of the growing season to refresh your planting beds.
  • If you’re planting in a new area of your yard, consider conducting a soil test. Soil tests are available through labs, universities and do it yourself test kits that we sell here at Merrifield Garden Center.

When planting flowering plants directly into garden beds:

  • For annuals and perennials, dig a hole that is twice as wide and equally deep as the plants you are planting.
  • For shrubs and trees, dig a hole that is at least 6” wider than the plant’s root ball on all sides. The top of your plant’s root ball should be slightly higher than ground level.
  • Mix equal parts Coast of Maine’s Planting Soil for Roses & Flowers with your existing garden soil and backfill around your plants, gently tamping down the soil as you go. Be careful not to overly compress the soil as it will eliminate valuable air space that the plant's roots will need to grow and thrive.
  • Apply 2-3” of mulch on top, making sure to keep it away from the trunk of newly planting trees and shrubs.
  • Water the area thoroughly until the root ball and soil are saturated fully.

When planting roses or other flowering plants in containers:

  • Select a container with drainage holes. If you’re planting one flowering shrub in the container, the vessel should be slightly larger than the root ball on all sides.
  • Place a piece of landscape fabric over the drainage holes if you have a piece handy. This will help prevent the soil from washing out of the drainage holes as you water.
  • Fill your container about halfway with Coast of Maine’s Planting Soil for Roses & Flowers.
  • Loosen and pull out the outer circling roots away from the root ball. Then place your shrub into the container and fill it the rest of the way with Coast of Maine’s Planting Soil for Roses & Flowers. Keep the soil about 1 to 2” below the lip of the container to prevent it from running over when you water.
  • Water thoroughly until the root ball is fully saturated.
