Fox Farm Ocean Forest Potting Soil is a premium potting blend that contains aged forest products, sphagnum peat moss, earthworm castings, bat guano, fish emulsion, crab meal and sandy loam. It is designed to provide plants with everything they need for strong, vigorous growth without the immediate need for supplemental feeding. While many soils rely strictly on land-based compost, Fox Farm Ocean Forest Potting Soil incorporates ingredients from the ocean, such as fish emulsion, crab meal and shrimp meal to provide a diverse range of trace minerals and nutrients. It is often considered the “top-tier” choice in the Fox Farm soil lineup.

Fox Farm Ocean Forest Potting Soil lists an NPK analysis of 0.30-0.45-0.05.This means it contains:

  • 30% Nitrogen (N): For green, leafy growth
  • 45% Phosphorus (P): For strong root development and blooms
  • 05% Potassium (K): For overall plant health and disease resistance

When using Fox Farm Ocean Forest Potting Soil:

  • Select a container that is slightly larger than the plant you are potting. Ensure the vessel has drainage holes to allow the water to drain through the container.
  • Fill your pot ⅔ of the way up the pot with Fox Farm Ocean Forest Potting Soil.
  • Remove your plant from the grower pot and loosen the roots before placing it in the soil. Make sure the plant is about the same depth in the soil as it was in the original container. Backfill around the plant with additional Fox Farm Ocean Forest Potting Soil. A good rule of thumb is to have the top of the soil be 1” below the lip of the container to prevent the soil from running over the lip of the container when watering.
  • Water thoroughly. Place the container on a tray or saucer to catch water as it drains from the bottom.

Can I use Fox Farm Ocean Forest Potting Soil for seed starting?

It’s better to use Fox Farm’s Happy Frog soil for seedlings as Fox Farm’s Ocean Forest can be too nutrient rich for delicate seeds. We recommend planting in Fox Farm Happy Frog for the first month, and then transplanting to Ocean Forest once the seedlings are established. Fox Farm Ocean Forest Potting Soil will provide up to a 90 day nutrient load, then you’ll need to supplement with fertilizer.

How long does it feed?

Because Fox Farm Ocean Forest Potting Soil is so nutrient-dense, you typically do not need to add supplemental fertilizers for the first 3 to 4 weeks.

Is it considered "hot"?

Yes, Ocean Forest is considered a "hot" soil, meaning it is very high in nutrients. While established plants love it, it can occasionally be too strong for very young seedlings, potentially causing "nutrient burn." If you have Fox Farm Ocean Forest Potting Soil on hand and want to use it for seed starting, we recommend mixing it with a lighter, peat based soil.
