How to calculate the square footage of an area

At Merrifield Garden Center, our team of plant specialists has worked to develop our own blended soil conditioner that’s specifically formulated for our Northern Virginia soil. Our Merrifield Planting Mix contains aged pine bark, premium organic compost, limestone and an organic nutrient supplement, resulting in a mix that is nutrient rich and lightweight. When planting trees and shrubs or starting a mixed landscape bed, we recommend mixing it into your natural soil at a ratio of 1/3 Merrifield Planting Mix to 2/3 existing soil.

This product comes in a 1.5 cubic foot bag with 60 bags fitting on a pallet. If you’re ordering a full pallet of material we will bring a forklift to unload the product onto your driveway.

We can deliver bags of Merrifield Planting Mix to your location. In addition to delivery, we can also provide installation services. If you’re interested in having our team install your planting mix, please book a landscape appointment and select Garden Cleanup, Mulch and Sod as the appointment type.

When planting trees, shrubs, annuals and perennials:

  • Dig holes that are at least 6” wider than the plant’s root ball on all sides. The top of your plant’s root ball should be slightly higher than ground level. For smaller plants, this means 1-2” high and for larger plants, this means 2-4” high.
  • Mix ⅓ Merrifield Planting Mix with ⅔ existing soil. If you are planting roses, mix ½ Merrifield Planting Mix with ½ existing soil.

If you wish to condition an annual or perennial bed:

  • Remove the weeds and debris from the area.
  • Dig or till the soil to break up and level the existing ground.
  • Incorporate 1” of Merrifield Planting Mix into the top 3” of the existing soil. One bag of our planting mix will cover 15 to 20 square feet at 1” deep.

For container grown plants:

  • Loosen and pull out the outer circling roots away from the root ball.
  • Keep the burlap and metal cage surrounding balled and burlapped plants.
  • Place the plant in the hole that you dug up and backfill the amended soil mixture already present around the root ball, tamping the soil as you go.
  • When the hole is ⅔ backfilled, add Merrifield’s Starter Plant Food and keep backfilling up to the shoulder of the root ball. We suggest not placing soil on top of the root ball.
  • Apply 2-3” of mulch on top, making sure to keep it away from the trunk.

Water the area thoroughly until the root ball and soil are saturated fully.

Where can I use your planting mix?

Our special planting mix can be used for anything and everything, but it is oriented towards trees, shrubs and flower beds especially. It works as a soil conditioner to add to your landscape.

What is the difference between your planting mix and something like Leafgro?

Our planting mix is a premium grade product as opposed to Leafgro which is all purpose and economy class. Our planting mix is like taking Leafgro and adding more to it. Right now, our planting mix does not have peat moss and coir is used as an alternative.

How can I apply it?

We recommend mixing our planting mix with your existing soil, stirring it together to improve structure and composition.
