Coast of Maine’s Organic Raised Bed Mix is the perfect planting medium for raised garden beds as it is ready-to-use and does not need to be combined with any other products. It is enriched with worm castings, mycorrhizae, biochar, greensand, kelp meal, and lobster and crab shell meal. These ingredients help with drainage, water retention and aeration while maintaining the soil structure. Along with raised beds, you can also use it in planter boxes and other containers in your garden where you plan to grow vegetables and herbs. Coast of Maine’s Organic Raised Bed Mix is an OMRI-listed organic product.

Coast of Maine’s Organic Raised Bed Mix lists an NPK analysis of 0.6-0.35-0.22.This means it contains:

  • 6% Nitrogen (N): For green, leafy growth
  • 35% Phosphorus (P): For strong root development and blooms
  • 22% Potassium (K): For overall plant health and disease resistance

Coast of Maine’s Raised Bed Mix is the ideal planting medium when working in raised planting beds.

If you’re starting a brand new raised bed:

  • Clear the area of weeds and debris.
  • If you’re planting on grass, we recommend removing the sod or laying down a layer of cardboard first to prevent grass from growing up into the bed.
  • Put your structure in place. You can use timbers or a raised garden bed kit.
  • Pour the Castine Blend directly into your raised bed or planter box.
  • For beds 24”+ deep, you can save money by filling the bottom third with top soil and the top two-thirds with Coast of Maine Raised Bed Mix.
  • Water the soil after filling and wait a few days before planting to allow it to settle. You may need to add a bit more soil to reach the desired planting height.

If you’re planting into an established raised garden bed, you can use Coast of Maine Raised Bed Mix to refresh your soil prior to planting. Rake out any winter debris and add a fresh 1 to 2” layer of Coast of Maine Raised Bed Mix to the top of the soil.

Many gardeners will also top-dress with Raised Bed Mix in the fall. This allows the organic material to settle and begin enriching the bed over the winter months.

Do I need to add fertilizer?

For the first 4 to 6 weeks, you typically do not need to add any fertilizer. The mix is pre-charged with a complex nutrient profile (0.6-0.35-0.22). After that period, heavy-feeding plants like tomato may benefit from a supplemental fertilizer.

Can I use it for pots and containers?

Yes. While Raised Bed Mix is designed for raised beds, its excellent drainage and aeration properties make it a fantastic potting soil for large outdoor containers.
