When installing Coast of Maine’s Planting Soil for Tomatoes & Vegetables as a soil conditioner:

  • Measure the length and width of your garden area to determine your square footage and put it into our convenient product calculator to determine how much soil conditioner you will need in your area.
  • Remove any existing debris from your desired planting area, such as leaves, branches, roots and twigs. If your soil is particularly dry, compacted or dense, water the area 1 to 2 days in advance to make the soil easier to work with. Then, use a garden fork or rake to till the soil where you’ll be adding the soil conditioner. Be careful to avoid compacting the soil too much as you are tilling.
  • Start spreading the soil conditioner around your desired area. We recommend applying a 2 to 3” layer of Coast of Maine’s Planting Soil for Tomatoes & Vegetables and working it into the top 4 to 6” of soil using a rake. This will help get the nutrients down into the root system. After you work and mix the conditioner into the soil, give it a thorough watering.
  • If you’re planting in a new area of your yard, consider conducting a soil test. Soil tests are available through labs, universities and do it yourself test kits that we sell here at Merrifield Garden Center.

When top dressing your garden beds with Coast of Maine’s Planting Soil for Tomatoes & Vegetables:

  • If you’ve been working in your vegetable garden beds seasonally and have fairly loose garden soil, you can use Coast of Maine’s Planting Soil for Tomatoes & Vegetables to topdress for the growing season.
  • Remove debris or spent plant material and put down a 2” layer of Coast of Maine’s Planting Soil for Tomatoes & Vegetables on top of the soil. Then, seed or transplant directly into it and water thoroughly.

When planting tomatoes and vegetables into container gardens:

  • Select a container with drainage holes.
  • Place a piece of landscape fabric over the drainage holes if you have a piece handy. This will help prevent the soil from washing out of the drainage holes as you water.
  • Fill your container ⅔ of the way with Coast of Maine’s Planting Soil for Tomatoes & Vegetables.
  • Loosen the roots on your tomato or vegetable plants and place the plants into your soil, backfilling as you go to fill up the rest of your container. Keep the soil about 1 to 2” below the lip of your container to prevent it from flowing over the edge when you water.
  • Once everything is tucked into the soil, water thoroughly.
