Tall fescue sod is the most popular choice in our area as it is relatively low maintenance, drought and heat tolerant and will grow in full sun as well as part shade conditions. Tall fescue sod is comparable to our Merrifield Tuff Play seed as it contains both Kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue. Sod comes in long slabs of pre-grown, typically one year old grass.

We stock sod in 10 square foot pieces with a maximum of 50 pieces on a pallet. If you’re ordering a full pallet of material we will bring a forklift to unload the product onto your driveway.

Delivery and Installation

We can deliver the fescue sod to your location. In addition to delivery, we can also provide installation services. If you’re interested in having our team install your fescue sod, please book a landscape appointment and select Garden Cleanup, Mulch and Sod as the appointment type.

If you’re installing your own sod, we recommend putting down your sod the same day you pick it up at the garden center so it remains fresh and well watered. Do not leave your new sod in the car overnight or leave it out in the bright sun. If you need to store it before you install, lay it out flat in an area out of direct sun and keep it moist.

To install new tall fescue sod in your landscape, follow these steps:

  • Prepare the soil: Rake up and remove any debris, existing vegetation or grass in poor conditions. Apply a thin layer of Leafgro, McGills Premium Compost or Topsoil and Merrifield Select seed starting lawn food and cultivate the soil to mix it into the existing ground at a depth of 2 to 4”. This creates a healthy foundation to support the roots of your new grass.
  • Lay your sod: Unroll your sod on top of your prepared ground. If you’re sodding a large area, we recommend placing your sod in a staggered offset (or brick) pattern. Place the sod where the edges align and do not overlap.

Water: Sod must remain moist for the roots to grow into your existing soil. Water the sod thoroughly upon installation and see our instructions on caring for your new sod.

Do I mow my new sod?

Mow your sod as needed to maintain it at a height of 3” tall.

What is the most important thing to do to make my sod successful?

Water! New sod must remain moist for the roots to grow and establish themselves into your landscape. See our instructions for caring for your new sod.

Do I need to limit my activity on the new sod?

We recommend limiting the foot traffic on your new sod. You can walk across it to get the mail, water or mow the lawn, but avoid playing on it for at least a month while your sod is working to get its roots established in the landscape.
