Pea gravel is the ½” size of Maryland river natural gravel. It is made up of small, ½” smooth stones in shades of white and tan and is most commonly used as a decorative walking path stone as it’s the most comfortable on bare feet. You can also use pea gravel in terrariums and aquariums, as the base to hold flowers in arrangements, as a potting medium for cactus and succulents and as a decorative top layer in potted plants. It also works well as a groundcover placed in bed borders or along pathways and as a decorative alternative to wood-based mulch.
Pea gravel is available in bulk by cubic yards.
We can deliver a maximum of 4 cubic yards on one truck over to your location. One yard of pea gravel is equivalent to 2,500 pounds. The maximum amount of weight we can fit on one truck is 12,500 lbs. If you need more than 4 cubic yards of pea gravel, it will require more truck(s) and additional delivery fee(s).
In addition to delivery, we can also provide installation services. If you’re interested in having our team install your pea gravel, please book a landscape appointment and select Draining & Grading Issues as the appointment type. If you are interested in having our landscape design team build out a patio, walkway, driveway or other hard surface, please book a Full Service landscape design appointment.
When installing pea gravel and other decorative stone products:
Rinse the gravel with water to remove any dust or dirt debris.
How do I know how much stone to use?
When you add stone, mulch, soil conditioner, topsoil, sand and gravel to your cart when browsing our website, we have a convenient calculator which determines how much material you’ll need for any given space in the garden. You can measure the space where you wish to add mulch, stone or topsoil and apply that to our calculator to see how much you will need.
When installing pea gravel, we typically install a 2” base layer of 21A or 57 gravel and top it with a 1” layer of pea gravel. You can also mix pea gravel with builders sand to bring out the warm tones naturally occurring in the stones.
What is pea gravel?
Pea gravel is a small, smooth, naturally rounded stone, usually about the size of a pea. It comes from riverbeds or quarries where water naturally smooths the stone.
Is pea gravel good for pathways?
Yes, it creates a timeless, natural, soft look. It can shift when walked on so consider using a stable base underneath and an edging product to contain it.
