Container gardens are a wonderful way to brighten up decks, patios and balconies with pops of color and foliage. Select bright annuals for easy customization as the seasons change, anchor a container with an evergreen fern, perennial or shrub to use it year round, or select perennials that can be planted out in the garden as they grow.
See our recipes below to get inspired as you create your own containers for sun or shade.
Containers for Shady Areas
Caladium is a great plant to use in shady areas! Add a pop of vivid color with this tropical, and anchor the container with an evergreen fern, if you want a plant that will grow year round. Lysimachia spills down the side and a deeply colored rex begonia offers additional color. You can swap out the caladium and rex begonia as the weather cools to keep this container going through the rest of the year.
Simple but vivid! Colocasia is a perfect tropical for shady environments, and begonia fills in the rest of the container, spilling over the edge. Select a begonia in any color that suits your space for bright blooms all summer. This container can easily be swapped for fall annuals when the season changes.
Container for Sunny Areas
A monochrome color scheme is a delightful twist for this container. You may want to remove the perennial heuchera to plant in the garden at the end of the season.
A wonderful way to create an herb container garden without sacrificing blooms! Oregano and basil are mixed with bright annual flowers for a beautiful and practical display.
